Frequently asked questions
What is the current PPF interest rate?
The rate is set every quarter by the Ministry of Finance and has been 7.1% p.a. since April 2020. Interest is compounded yearly and credited on 31 March.
When should I deposit to earn full interest?
Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month, so depositing before the 5th of April earns interest for the whole year. This calculator assumes that.
What are the deposit limits and tax benefits?
Minimum ₹500 and maximum ₹1,50,000 per financial year. Deposits qualify for Section 80C under the old regime, and interest and maturity are tax-free (EEE).
Can I extend PPF after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits. Submit Form 4 within a year of maturity to extend with contributions.
How much will I get if I invest ₹1.5 lakh in PPF every year?
At 7.1% for 15 years, about ₹40.7 lakh on ₹22.5 lakh deposited.
Is the PPF calculator the same for post office and bank accounts?
Yes. PPF rules and the interest rate are the same whether the account is with a post office or a bank.
How is PPF interest calculated?
