PAN Card Validator

Check whether a PAN number is in the correct format and decode the holder type from its 4th character — instantly, without sending it anywhere.

About PAN Card Validator

This free PAN card validator checks whether a PAN number is in the correct format — five letters, four digits and a letter — and decodes what each part means. The 4th character tells you the holder type, such as individual, company, HUF, firm or trust, and the 5th is the first letter of the surname or name.

Paste a list to check many PAN numbers at once, which helps when cleaning a vendor or employee list before TDS returns. The check runs entirely in your browser, nothing is saved, and a valid format still needs confirming on the Income Tax e-filing portal.

How to use PAN Card Validator

  1. Type or paste the 10-character PAN.
  2. See each format rule pass or fail.
  3. Read the holder type (individual, company, HUF, firm, trust…) and what the 5th character means.
  4. Check several PANs at once in the bulk box.

Frequently asked questions

What is the format of a PAN?

Ten characters: five letters, four digits and one letter (for example ABCPE1234F). The 4th letter shows the holder type and the 5th is the first letter of the surname for individuals or of the name for others.

Does a valid format mean the PAN is genuine?

No. The last character is a check letter made with an algorithm the Income Tax Department does not publish, so a correctly formatted PAN can still be wrong. Verify it on the Income Tax e-filing portal (Verify Your PAN) when it matters.

Is my PAN stored or sent anywhere?

No. The check runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type is saved or uploaded.

How do I check if a PAN number is valid?

A valid PAN has 10 characters in the pattern AAAAA9999A, and the 4th letter must be a known holder type such as P, C, H, F, A, T, B, L, J or G. For proof that it exists, use Verify Your PAN on the e-filing portal.

What does P mean in a PAN number?

P as the 4th character means the PAN belongs to an individual person. C is a company, H a Hindu Undivided Family and F a firm.
