GSTIN Validator

Check a GSTIN’s format and official check digit, decode its state, PAN and entity number — plus PAN and IFSC format checks.

About GSTIN Validator

Use this free GSTIN validator to check whether a GST number is correctly formed before you put it on an invoice. Paste the 15-character GSTIN and the tool tests each rule, including the official mod-36 check digit, then decodes the state code, the embedded PAN and the entity number.

It catches typing mistakes such as a wrong character or swapped digits instantly. Extra tabs check the format of a PAN or an IFSC code. Note that a valid format does not prove the GSTIN is active; confirm registration status on the official GST portal. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use GSTIN Validator

  1. Paste a GSTIN (15 characters).
  2. See each rule pass or fail, including the mod-36 check digit.
  3. Read the decoded state, PAN and entity type.
  4. Switch tabs to check a PAN or an IFSC code.

Frequently asked questions

Does a valid check digit mean the GSTIN is active?

No. It only proves the number is correctly formed. To confirm it is registered and active, search it on the official GST portal (services.gst.gov.in → Search Taxpayer).

How is the GSTIN check digit calculated?

Each of the first 14 characters is converted to a value 0–35, multiplied alternately by 1 and 2, and the quotient and remainder of each product by 36 are added. The check digit is (36 − sum mod 36) mod 36, converted back to a character.

What does the 4th character of a PAN mean?

It shows the holder type: P for individual, C for company, H for HUF, F for firm/LLP, T for trust, and so on.

How do I verify a GST number?

First check the format and check digit here. Then search the GSTIN on the GST portal's Search Taxpayer page to confirm the business name and that registration is active.

What is a valid GSTIN number example?

A GSTIN has 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, a 10-character PAN, an entity number, the letter Z by default and a check digit, for example 27AAPFU0939F1ZV.

What do the first two digits of a GSTIN mean?

They are the state code of registration, for example 27 for Maharashtra and 07 for Delhi.
