How are tax and tip split?
Each person’s share of shared items plus their own items forms their subtotal. GST and tip are applied to that subtotal, so people who ordered more pay proportionally more tax and tip.
What GST applies to restaurant bills?
Most standalone restaurants charge 5% GST (2.5% CGST + 2.5% SGST). Restaurants in hotels with room tariffs above ₹7,500 charge 18%.
Is a service charge compulsory?
No. Under CCPA guidelines (upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2025), restaurants cannot add a service charge automatically or force you to pay it; any tip is voluntary.
