Frequently asked questions
What GST applies to a taxi fare?
Since 22 September 2025 (GST 2.0, Notification 15/2025-Central Tax (Rate)), passenger transport by road, including a motor cab, is taxed at 5% without input tax credit, or at 18% with full input tax credit if the operator opts for it. The earlier 12% option was removed. Drivers and operators who are not GST registered do not charge GST — leave it at 0%. Bookings made through an app such as a ride-hailing aggregator are taxed under the aggregator’s rules, not on this bill.
Are toll and parking taxed?
Toll, parking and state entry tax paid on the passenger’s behalf are normally billed at actuals. Mark them “at actuals” and they are added after GST.
Can I bill a minimum distance?
Yes. Set “Minimum km” — for outstation trips many operators charge for at least 250–300 km a day. The bill shows when the minimum applies.
Can I make a bill for any purchase?
Issue these documents only for real transactions that you or your business actually made. Making bills for purchases that did not happen is fraud and a punishable offence.
What GST rate applies to cab services?
Since 22 September 2025, passenger transport by motor cab is 5% without input tax credit or 18% with it. The old 12% option was removed. Unregistered drivers and operators charge no GST.
