Frequently asked questions
When is the landlord’s PAN required?
If the annual rent you pay exceeds ₹1,00,000, your employer needs the landlord’s PAN to allow the HRA exemption. If the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration from the landlord is required.
Do I need a revenue stamp?
A ₹1 revenue stamp is customarily affixed and signed across on cash receipts above ₹5,000. It is not needed when rent is paid by bank transfer, UPI or cheque.
Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?
Yes, if you genuinely pay rent to a parent who owns the house and they report it as income. Keep bank transfer records as proof.
Can I make my own rent receipt?
Yes. A rent receipt only needs to show the tenant, landlord, property address, rent amount, period and payment mode, and be signed by the landlord.
How many rent receipts do I need for HRA?
Employers usually ask for receipts for every month of the financial year, or at least one per quarter. Check your employer's policy.
Can I claim HRA under the new tax regime?
No. HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is available only under the old tax regime.
