Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of cost. Buying at ₹80 and selling at ₹100 is a 20% margin but a 25% markup.
How do I find the price for a target margin?
Price = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin). For a 30% margin on a ₹700 cost, price = 700 ÷ 0.7 = ₹1,000. Adding 30% to cost (₹910) gives only a 23% margin.
How does GST affect margin?
GST collected belongs to the government. If your price is GST-inclusive, margin is calculated on the price net of GST. If you are GST-registered, enter your cost excluding the input tax credit you can claim.
What is the profit margin formula?
Profit margin = (Selling price − Cost) ÷ Selling price × 100. For cost ₹80 and price ₹100, the margin is 20%.
How do I calculate profit percentage?
Profit percentage is usually profit on cost: (Selling price − Cost) ÷ Cost × 100, which is the same as markup.
What is a good profit margin?
It varies by business: grocery retail often runs on single-digit margins, while services and software can exceed 30%.
