PDF Header & Footer (Bates Numbering)

Add a header and footer to every PDF page — text on the left, centre or right with page numbers, date and file name — or Bates numbers that continue across several files.

About PDF Header & Footer (Bates Numbering)

Add a header and footer to every page of a PDF. Type text in any of six places, left, centre or right at the top or bottom, and use tokens for the page number, total pages, date, file name and title. Choose the font, size, colour and distance from the edge, add a thin line, and swap left and right on facing pages.

Bates numbering stamps a unique number such as MISHRA-000001 on every page and continues across several files in the order you choose, ready for court filings, audits and due diligence. A live preview shows the result. Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded.

How to use PDF Header & Footer (Bates Numbering)

  1. Drop one or more PDFs, or try the sample. For Bates numbering, add the files in the order they should be numbered.
  2. Type text in any of the six boxes. Use {n} for the page number, {p} for the total, {date}, {file}, {title} and {bates}.
  3. Set the Bates prefix, start number and digits, the font, size, colour and margin, and which pages get the text.
  4. Check the preview and click Add header and footer. Several files download as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened and processed entirely inside your browser using JavaScript libraries. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe for confidential documents.

What is Bates numbering?

A unique number stamped on every page of a set of documents, such as MISHRA-000001, so each page can be cited exactly — common for court filings, audits and due diligence. Here the number continues from one file to the next in the order of the list.

Which tokens can I use?

{n} page number, {p} pages in the file, {date} today’s date (or the date you choose), {file} file name, {title} the PDF’s title, and {bates} the Bates number.

Can I use Hindi text?

The built-in PDF fonts cover English letters, numbers and common symbols only. For Hindi, put the text into an image and use Add Watermark to PDF with an image instead.

What about password-protected PDFs?

PDFs that open without a password but block editing or printing (an owner password, common on bank statements and government downloads) work directly — the restrictions are lifted in your browser. A PDF that asks for a password to open must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF (you need its password).

How do I add Bates numbers to several PDFs?

Add all the files in the order they should be numbered, set the prefix, start number and digits, click Put the Bates number bottom right, then Add header and footer. Each file continues the numbering of the one before.

Can I add the file name and date to every page?

Yes. Type {file} and {date} in any header or footer box; they are filled in on every page.
