Steel Weight Calculator
Weight of TMT rebars from diameter, number of bars and length using D²/162, with a kg per metre table.
About Steel Weight Calculator
This steel weight calculator finds the weight of TMT rebars, also called saria or sariya, using the standard D²/162 formula. Pick the bar diameter, enter the number of bars and the length of each, and add rows for other diameters to get the total weight in kg and tonnes.
A reference table shows the weight per metre for common sizes from 6 mm to 32 mm, handy when checking a dealer’s bill or estimating steel for a slab, beam or column. It works in metres or feet, is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser.
How to use Steel Weight Calculator
- Pick the bar diameter for each row.
- Enter the number of bars and the length of each bar.
- Add rows for other diameters.
- Read the total weight in kg and tonnes.
Frequently asked questions
Where does D²/162 come from?
Steel density is 7850 kg/m³. Weight per metre = (π/4) × D² × 7850 ÷ 10⁶ ≈ D²/162.2 kg, with D in mm.
What is the weight of a 12 mm bar?
12² ÷ 162 = 0.889 kg per metre, so a standard 12 m bar weighs about 10.67 kg.
Why does the dealer’s weight differ?
IS 1786 allows a rolling tolerance (e.g. ±7% for 8–10 mm, ±5% for 12–16 mm, ±3% above 16 mm), so actual weights can vary slightly.
What is the formula for steel weight?
Weight in kg per metre = D² ÷ 162, where D is the bar diameter in mm. Multiply by the total length to get the weight.
How much does a 12 mm TMT bar weigh?
About 0.889 kg per metre, so one 12 m bar weighs roughly 10.7 kg.
How many bars are in one tonne of 10 mm steel?
A 10 mm bar weighs about 7.4 kg per 12 m length, so roughly 135 bars make a tonne.
