PDF to Markdown

Convert a PDF to clean Markdown with headings, bold and italic, lists, links and tables — with a live preview, copy and .md download.

About PDF to Markdown

This PDF to Markdown converter turns a PDF into clean GitHub-flavoured Markdown, with headings, bold and italic text, bullet and numbered lists, links and pipe tables. A live preview shows the result next to the source, and you can copy the Markdown or download it as an .md file.

It is useful for moving documents into Notion, Obsidian or a GitHub repository, writing documentation, or preparing a PDF to paste into an AI chat tool. Images can be left out, embedded in the file or saved separately in a ZIP. It is free with no sign-up, and the PDF is converted in your browser, never uploaded.

How to use PDF to Markdown

  1. Drop a PDF or try the sample.
  2. Choose how images are handled and whether to mark page breaks.
  3. Edit the Markdown on the left if you like — the preview updates live.
  4. Copy it, or download the .md file (or a ZIP with images).

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened and converted entirely inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe for confidential documents such as bank statements and contracts.

Which Markdown flavour is produced?

GitHub-flavoured Markdown: # headings, **bold**, *italic*, - and 1. lists, [links](url) and pipe tables with right-aligned number columns. It works in GitHub, Notion, Obsidian and most AI chat tools.

How are headings detected?

Lines set in a larger font than the body text become headings (largest = #, next = ##, and so on). Short bold lines on their own also become headings.

What happens to images?

Choose Omit, Embed (a self-contained file with images inside as data URIs) or Separate files (a ZIP containing the .md file and an images folder).

How do I convert a PDF to Markdown?

Drop the PDF, check the live preview, choose how images are handled, then copy the Markdown or download the .md file.

What is a Markdown (.md) file?

Markdown is a plain-text format that uses simple symbols, such as # for headings and - for lists. It is widely used for notes, documentation and README files.
