Frequently asked questions
How many letters are in the Hindi varnamala?
This chart teaches 52 letters: 13 swar (vowels, including अं and अः), 33 vyanjan (consonants), 4 sanyukt (joint) letters क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र, and the two extra letters ड़ and ढ़. Some school books count 11 swar because they treat अं and अः separately.
Why do some cards say “inside words”?
Letters such as ङ, ञ, ण, ड़, ढ़ and अः almost never start a Hindi word, so the example shows a word where the letter appears in the middle or end.
Why does the sound have an English accent?
Sounds come from your device’s text-to-speech voices. Install a Hindi voice (Google Text-to-speech on Android; Chrome on desktop includes one) for the best pronunciation.
