Waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio and waist size with WHO, NICE and Indian cut-offs for belly fat and heart-health risk.
About Waist-to-Hip & Waist-to-Height Ratio Calculator
This free waist-to-hip ratio calculator measures belly fat, which is a better sign of diabetes and heart-disease risk than weight alone. Enter your waist, hips and height in centimetres or inches, and it works out your waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio and waist size.
Each result is compared with a published cut-off: WHO’s 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women, NICE’s rule to keep your waist under half your height, and the Indian limits of 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women. It runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?
WHO uses 0.90 or more for men and 0.85 or more for women as the point where the risk of diabetes and heart disease is substantially increased.
What is the waist-to-height ratio rule?
Keep your waist to less than half your height. NICE (UK) treats 0.4–0.49 as healthy, 0.5–0.59 as increased risk and 0.6 or more as high risk. It works for all adults, including Asian groups.
What waist size is too high for Indians?
Indian consensus guidelines use 90 cm (about 35.5 inches) for men and 80 cm (about 31.5 inches) for women as the cut-off for abdominal obesity — lower than the Western limits, because South Asians tend to develop diabetes at smaller waist sizes.
How do I measure my waist correctly?
Stand straight, breathe out normally and measure midway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, keeping the tape level and snug but not tight.
Which is better, BMI or waist-to-height ratio?
Waist-to-height ratio tracks belly fat, so it often predicts heart and diabetes risk better than BMI, especially for South Asians. Using both gives the fullest picture.
