Base64 Encode & Decode

Encode text to Base64 or decode it back with full UTF-8 (Hindi, emoji) support, URL-safe mode and file ⇄ data URI conversion.

About Base64 Encode & Decode

This Base64 tool encodes text to Base64 and decodes Base64 back to readable text, with full UTF-8 support so Hindi and emoji characters survive the round trip. The result updates live as you type, and a URL-safe option uses - and _ without padding, as found in JWTs and web addresses.

In file mode, drop any file, such as an image, to get a Base64 data URI, or paste Base64 to download it as a file. It is useful for developers debugging APIs, email attachments and embedded images. The tool is free, needs no sign-up, and everything is processed in your browser.

How to use Base64 Encode & Decode

  1. Choose Text or File.
  2. For text, pick Encode or Decode and type — the result updates live.
  3. Tick URL-safe to use - and _ without padding (used in JWTs and URLs).
  4. For files, drop a file to get a data URI, or paste Base64 to download it as a file.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding that anyone can reverse. It makes binary data safe to put in text formats like JSON, email or HTML — it does not hide it.

Why do Hindi or emoji characters break in other tools?

The browser’s btoa() only accepts Latin-1. This tool converts text to UTF-8 bytes first, so नमस्ते encodes and decodes correctly.

What is URL-safe Base64?

It replaces + with - and / with _ and drops the trailing = padding so the value can sit in a URL or filename. JWTs use it.

Why is the Base64 bigger than my file?

Base64 uses 4 characters for every 3 bytes, so the output is about 33% larger than the original.

How do I decode a Base64 string?

Choose Decode and paste the Base64 text; the original text appears instantly. If it is a file, use File mode to download it.

How do I convert an image to Base64?

Switch to File, drop the image and copy the data URI to use in HTML or CSS.

Can Base64 be decoded without a key?

Yes. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption, so anyone can decode it without a key or password.
