Resume Format for Freshers in India: Sections, ATS Tips, Samples
A practical fresher resume format for India: sections to include, ATS-friendly layout, action verbs, sample bullet points, the one-page rule and mistakes.
As a fresher you have little or no work experience, so your resume has to prove potential instead: what you studied, what you built, what you took responsibility for, and how clearly you can communicate. Recruiters in India often spend well under a minute on a first scan, and many companies filter applications through an applicant tracking system (ATS) before a person sees them. A clean, focused, one-page resume beats a colourful two-page one almost every time.

The ideal fresher resume structure
Use this order unless you have a strong reason to change it:
- Header: full name, phone number, professional email, city, and links to LinkedIn and GitHub or a portfolio if relevant.
- Summary (2–3 lines): who you are, your key skills and the role you want.
- Education: degree, college, university, year, and CGPA or percentage. Add Class 12 and Class 10 briefly.
- Skills: technical skills grouped sensibly, plus a few relevant tools.
- Projects: two to four projects with what you did and the result.
- Internships and training, if any.
- Certifications relevant to the role.
- Achievements and positions of responsibility: hackathons, competitions, NSS, college clubs, event organisation.
- Languages (optional, useful for customer-facing roles).
If you have a strong internship, move it above projects. If your academics are your strongest point, keep education near the top.
What to leave out
- Photograph, unless the employer asks for one.
- Date of birth, father's name, marital status, religion and full home address. These were common in older Indian formats but are not needed and can invite bias. A city is enough.
- "Objective" statements like "to work in a challenging environment". Replace with a specific summary.
- A "Declaration" paragraph at the end. It adds nothing on a private-sector resume. Some government or PSU applications ask for one; include it only then.
- Hobbies that say nothing about you. "Reading" is filler; "Run a 2,000-subscriber YouTube channel on budget cooking" is interesting.
Make it ATS-friendly
An ATS reads your resume as text and matches it against the job description. To avoid being filtered out by formatting rather than ability:
- Use a single-column layout with standard headings such as "Education", "Skills" and "Projects".
- Avoid tables, text boxes, icons for contact details and skills shown as bars or stars. Many systems cannot read them.
- Use standard fonts such as Calibri, Arial or similar, at 10–12 pt for body text.
- Save as a text-based PDF (not a scanned image). Check by selecting text in the PDF; if you can highlight words, the ATS can read them.
- Mirror the job description's keywords where they genuinely apply. If the job asks for "SQL" and "Power BI", and you know them, those exact words should appear.
- Name the file sensibly:
Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf.
The one-page rule
For freshers, one page is the standard. It forces you to choose your best material and respects the recruiter's time. If you are going onto a second page, cut school-level achievements, generic skills (MS Office, "hard-working"), and projects that do not relate to the role. Academic CVs for research and PhD applications are an exception; they can be longer and follow a different format. The CV Maker suits that style.
Write bullet points that show impact
A strong bullet follows the pattern action verb + what you did + how + result. Numbers help, even small ones.
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| Did a project on an e-commerce website. | Built an e-commerce web app in React and Node.js with cart, login and Razorpay test payments; deployed on Render and used by 40 classmates. |
| Internship at a CA firm. | Reconciled GST returns for 12 small-business clients using Tally and Excel, cutting the monthly review time by about a day. |
| Member of college fest team. | Led a 15-member sponsorship team that raised ₹2.4 lakh from 11 local sponsors for the annual tech fest. |
| Knowledge of Python. | Automated attendance reports for the department using Python and pandas, replacing a weekly two-hour manual task. |
Useful action verbs
- Building: built, designed, developed, created, implemented, launched, automated.
- Analysis: analysed, researched, evaluated, measured, tested, identified.
- Leadership: led, organised, coordinated, mentored, managed, represented.
- Improvement: improved, reduced, increased, streamlined, optimised, resolved.
- Communication: presented, wrote, trained, negotiated, documented.
Avoid "responsible for" and "worked on". They describe a duty, not an achievement.
A sample summary
Final-year B.Com student at Delhi University with hands-on experience in Tally Prime, GST return preparation and advanced Excel from a three-month internship at a CA firm. Looking for an accounts executive role where I can grow into financial reporting.
Computer science graduate (CGPA 8.4) skilled in Java, Spring Boot and SQL, with three deployed projects and a top-10 finish at a national hackathon. Seeking a backend developer role.
Skills section tips
- Group skills: "Languages: Java, Python", "Tools: Git, Docker, Figma", "Accounting: Tally Prime, GST filing".
- List only what you can discuss confidently in an interview.
- Soft skills are best shown through bullets, not listed as words like "team player".
Common mistakes
- Spelling and grammar errors. Read it aloud, then ask a friend to check.
- An unprofessional email address. Create one with your name.
- Inconsistent dates and formatting. Pick one style (for example "Jun 2025 – Aug 2025") and stick to it.
- Sending the same resume for every job. Tweak the summary, skills and project order for each role.
- Exaggerating. Interviewers ask about every line; being caught out ends the conversation.
- Missing links. If you mention projects, link to the code or a live demo.
Pair it with a short cover letter
Many freshers skip the cover letter, which is exactly why a short, specific one stands out. Three paragraphs are enough: why this company, what you bring, and a polite close. The Cover Letter Generator gives you a structure to start from.
