Marriage Biodata Format: What to Include, Tips and Privacy

How to write a marriage biodata in India: personal, family, education and optional horoscope details, clean layout, and privacy tips for WhatsApp sharing.

A marriage biodata is often the first impression a family forms, usually on a phone screen, forwarded through several WhatsApp groups. A good one is clear, honest, neatly laid out and fits on one or two pages. It also shares no more personal information than necessary, because once it is forwarded you lose control over where it goes.

Make one now: the free Marriage Biodata Maker offers several elegant templates, optional sections for horoscope details, and PDF or image download. Everything stays in your browser.

What to include

1. Personal details

  • Full name
  • Date of birth (and, if relevant to your family, time and place of birth)
  • Height
  • Complexion or physical description, only if your family considers it necessary
  • Religion, caste or community, and sub-caste or gotra if relevant to your family
  • Mother tongue and languages known
  • Diet: vegetarian, eggetarian or non-vegetarian
  • Current city

2. Education and career

  • Highest qualification with institution and year
  • Occupation, designation and employer (or type of business)
  • Work location
  • Annual income, if you choose to share it; many people write a range or "on request"

3. Family details

  • Father's name and occupation
  • Mother's name and occupation
  • Siblings: number, whether married, and their occupations
  • Family type (nuclear or joint) and native place

4. Horoscope details (optional)

For families who match horoscopes: rashi, nakshatra, gotra, manglik status, and whether a kundli is available. Keep this section compact, or leave it out entirely and share the kundli only when asked.

5. About me and partner preferences

Two or three sentences about your personality, interests and values, and a short note on what you are looking for. Keep it positive and specific rather than listing demands. "Enjoys trekking and cooking; looking for someone kind, family-oriented and open to living in Pune" says far more than "looking for a fair, tall, well-settled partner".

6. Contact details

One contact number, ideally a parent's or a dedicated number, and optionally an email address.

Layout and presentation tips

  • One page is ideal, two at most. Families often read on a phone.
  • Use clear headings and a simple two-column "label: value" layout.
  • Choose one or two readable fonts and a subtle border or colour. Heavy decorations and many fonts make it hard to read.
  • A traditional symbol or invocation at the top is common and fine if your family prefers it.
  • Add one recent, well-lit photo with a plain background. A natural, smiling head-and-shoulders photo works best; avoid heavy filters. The Passport Photo tool can crop it neatly.
  • Export as PDF for printing and as a JPEG or PNG for WhatsApp, which previews images instantly.
  • Keep the file small so it loads quickly on slow connections; the Image Compressor can shrink the image version to a few hundred KB.

Sample layout

A simple, readable biodata usually follows this structure. The values below are illustrative only.

Sample "about me" lines

Cheerful and grounded, I enjoy classical music, weekend treks and trying new recipes. I value honesty and family, and I am looking for a partner who is kind, ambitious and respects each other's careers.
A software engineer who loves cricket and travel. I am close to my family and hope to find someone warm, understanding and open to settling in Bengaluru.

Be honest

Age, height, education, income and any previous marriage should be stated accurately. Details will come out in conversations and verification, and a mismatch damages trust far more than the fact itself. If something needs context, it is better to mention it briefly than to omit it.

Privacy tips for sharing on WhatsApp

Biodatas get forwarded widely, and some end up on unknown groups or websites. A few precautions protect you and your family:

  • Do not include your full home address. The city or locality is enough until you are in serious conversation.
  • Leave out Aadhaar, PAN and other ID numbers entirely. They are never needed on a biodata.
  • Avoid your exact employer and income in the first version if you are concerned; share them after the first conversation.
  • Use a parent's number or a separate number rather than your personal one.
  • Share full birth time and place only when required for horoscope matching, and only with families you are in touch with.
  • Add a small line such as "Shared in confidence for matrimonial purposes" at the bottom. It will not stop misuse, but it signals expectations.
  • Keep a list of who you sent it to, so you can follow up or ask them to delete it later.
  • Be alert to scams: never send money or OTPs to a "prospective match" or "matchmaker" you have not verified.

Keep it up to date

Update the biodata whenever something important changes, such as a new job, a move to another city or a completed degree, and change the file name to include the month (for example Ananya-Sharma-Biodata-Sep-2026.pdf). That way families can tell which version is current, and outdated copies circulating in old groups are easier to spot. Replace the photo at least once a year.

A simple checklist before sending

  1. All names and dates spelled and formatted correctly.
  2. Photo is recent and clear.
  3. No ID numbers or full address.
  4. Contact number works and is answered.
  5. File opens properly on a phone, and text is readable without zooming too much.
